The decision to divide the courtyard into interior and exterior spaces was made due to difficulty of applying modern home comfort techniques like air conditioning into a traditional setting. Shekhawat Vila’s courtyard is therefore cut in half by large glass windows, allowing it to be a living space whatever the weather.
Another element to the design is the traditional division between public and private space in Arabic homes. Unlike in traditional villas, Shekhawat Vila does not have a private area for the family, instead fold-out wooden screens separate certain sections of the courtyard.
